Planning an unforgettable safari in Tanzania? Here’s an important travel requirement you should know before your arrival.
Effective October 1, 2026, the Government of Tanzania introduced mandatory inbound travel insurance for eligible international visitors entering the country. The new requirement is designed to provide travellers with protection against medical emergencies and other covered incidents during their stay.
Under the new regulations, the insurance costs USD 44 per adult and provides coverage for up to 92 days, including multiple entries during the policy’s validity. Children aged 3–17 receive a 50% discount, while infants under three are covered free of charge. A 10% group discount is available for qualifying groups of ten or more adults. Coverage includes emergency medical treatment, medical evacuation, repatriation, and lost luggage, subject to the policy’s terms and conditions.
Where Should Travellers Purchase the Insurance?
Visitors arriving through Mainland Tanzania should obtain their insurance from the National Insurance Corporation (NIC), while travellers entering through Zanzibar should use the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC).

Travellers visiting both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar generally need only one valid mandatory inbound insurance policy for the same journey, based on their first point of entry. Certain travellers, including qualifying nationals or residents of East African Community and Southern African Development Community countries, may be exempt from the Mainland requirement. Zanzibar exemptions should be checked separately.
